Scripture as the Word of the Coming Kingdom

In his excellent little book, When the Time Had Fully Come, Dutch New Testament scholar Herman Ridderbos (1909-2007) closes with these powerful words regarding the nature and function of Scripture:

The Scriptures of the New Testament bear their authority because they are not mere human writings but because they have a contribution to make to the coming of the Kingdom itself. They are the rock on which Christ has built and will continue to build his Church, in accordance with the very nature of the revelation of God in Christ Himself. From this point of view we are to approach and to believe them and to preserve them as the prophetic, infallible word of God, a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in our hearts.
